Cellular Jail

Constructed between 1857 and 1906, the Cellular jail called “Kalapani” stands as a national memorial and a gritty reminder of colonial rule and the undaunted spirit of our Indian freedom fighters who were sent here to face punishment by the British.

The silent walls and corridors of Cellular Jail have witnessed the horrors of torture and the spirit of resistance and still stand, bleak and empty as ever. Cellular Jail was built to give the guards an all-around view of the inmates, you can now catch amazing views from the top of the watchtowers.

Derived from the Hindi words “kala” meaning death and “pani” meaning water, the cellular jail held freedom fighters like Yogendra Shukla, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Babarao Savarkar.

Visit the gallows of a cellular jail for an eerie experience, get a feel of prison life, and admire the strategic constructions that highlight the tactical mind of the British Empire.

Visiting Hours: 9.00 am to 5.00 pm open all days except on all National Holiday.
